Print Service is Ready to Roll

Fotomoto Prints

We are excited to announce a new feature you are sure to love! Capture My Chicago photographers can now sell their photos! Folks looking for Chicago-area art to hang on their walls can fulfill their heart's desire right here at Capture My Chicago.

We want to help Capture My Chicago photographers succeed and helping photographers sell prints is one way we can achieve that goal. As Capture My Chicago grows and we publish future products (we are considering a book or calendar in 2012), Capture My Chicago photographers are exposed to more and more people interested in Chicago art. The result? Local folks buying local art from local photographers. It's a win-win!

Users have been asking for this feature for some time, so we are thrilled to show you how it works and get all of our Capture My Chicago photographers their own store so they can start selling their photos (and making some money). Before we jump into the how-to, here are a few details of the print service to give you a better idea of what's involved.

First, our print service partner is Fotomoto. They've created a great system that handles the entire process so all a photographer needs to do is opt-in and set prices for various print types and sizes. The great part is, it's free to setup a store and photographers keep the profits from the sale of their photos (after print costs and transactional fees).

Fotomoto's system is built for photographers. Photographers can choose to offer specific types of products like fine-art prints, e-cards, commercially-licensed downloads, and so on, and photographers set the price for each size and each type of product. Photographers can even offer limited-editions or create promotions to "sell" photos at cost! This means photographers are in complete control of their photography and have the opportunity to make money on their work.

If you want to get your store setup, read on for the step-by-step. It's super simple and you don't have to re-upload any files or worry about credit-card processing, shipments, customer support, etc. Fotomoto handles everything!

So you want to sell your photos? Great! Here's how to get started...

Step 1: On your user settings page (under You->Settings), you'll see a block labeled photo store. Click I want to sell photos to learn more and get the ball rolling.

Step 2: Next, read up on the details of opening a store. Once you understand how it works, click agree and enable store. This sends a request to Fotomoto, our print partner, to get your account created in their system.

Agree!

Step 3: You'll see a flash at the top of the page that lets you know your store has been enabled. Yay!

Enabled

Step 4: Check your email! Fotomoto will send you an email with instructions on how to enable your account. The email will be sent to the email address associated with your Capture My Chicago account and it will be from noreply@fotomoto.com. Once you get it, click on the activation link.

Step 5: Clicking on the activation link in the email sent to you by Fotomoto will take you to fotomoto.com where you are asked to set your password. This does not need to match your Capture My Chicago password as the account you are creating on Fotomoto is completely separate from your Capture My Chicago account.

Step 6: Once you've set your Fotomoto password and logged into your Fotomoto account, poke around to get comfortable with your account settings. It would be a good idea to read up on how to set pricing for your photos. You can also set which types of products you want to sell (prints, e-cards, downloads, etc.).

Step 7: You might notice Fotomoto doesn't have any of your images to sell yet. Don't fret! Your photos will show up in your Fotomoto account as people view your Capture My Chicago photos. When anyone visits your photo's page, a small version of your photo is submitted to Fotomoto for inclusion in your store. When someone places an order for one of your photos, your original-size photo will be sent from our servers to Fotomoto behind the scenes, securely. You can try it for yourself if you'd like. Look for the buy it button on one of your photo's pages.
