White-Crowned Sparrow by David Uthe

White-Crowned Sparrow

This is another species that is only in the Chicago area during the cooler months. In the summer, it moves north to breed. So, to see it live, you need to get out to the area woods .... now. :-)

Nice shot. Do you use binoculars first?

Thanks, Bob .... There's usually not enough time with these flighty little birds to use binoculars, then raise a camera for a shot. By that time, they're halfway across the woods.

Instead, I've learned to walk slowly with the camera preset for an exposure given the existing lighting, while scanning the tree limbs and brush. If I spot movement, I take a shot as quickly as possible and worry about ID-ing the subject later. Back home, I can study the still-shot for ID-details almost impossible to notice during the few moments a live subject allows in the field.
