commented over 1 year agoThanks. If you've never visited Starved Rock in the winter, it's worth the trip. Never know what you're going to find with the waterfalls. Treacherous footing though.

Ray Mathis
commented over 1 year agoThanks Tiffany and Tatiana. You never know how the ice if going to form from year to year. Sometimes it's hard to capture interesting detail in it with film because it's so white.

commented over 1 year agoLooks like an alien planet! Very nice. I will have go there sometime.
Ray Mathis
commented over 1 year agoAbout a mile hike. Gets ugly sometimes for footing. Usually in Jan and early Feb, whenever it gets really cold, and you need some snow melt usually to get water flow.

commented over 1 year agoGorgeous!! We've been in summer, but I want to go in the winter. It's just mustering up the strength to brave the cold!
Ray Mathis
commented over 1 year agoThank you Pamela. La Salle, Owl, and St. Louis canyons have the biggest and best ice falls. The upper and lower Dells of Mathiessen SP each have a significant ice falls. Hennipen Canyon has the biggest, but you either have to rappel in, or do like I did and walk in on the Illinois River when it freezes solid along the shore. But's that's tricky. Don't know if I would do it again. Consider getting these things they call "Stabl-icers". They're rubber with sheet metal screws that you attach to your shoes/boots and grab the ice like velcro. Amazing help. Also good if you want to explore Lake Michigan for ice forms.

commented over 1 year agoThanks for the tips! This may be a good trip this winter. Like I said, it's mustering up the courage to brave the cold. But I'm sure it just a beautiful place to visit in the winter. I'm sure fall is gorgeous too.

commented over 1 year agoAmazing, Awesome, etc etc are adjectives that don't even come close to describing this photo or your talent. Headed that way in October for first time.
Ray Mathis
commented over 1 year agoThanks Norma. Make sure you go to Mathiessen SP just south of Starved Rock. Lot's of photo opportunities there in fall because there's so many sugar maples, and leaves fall on the dark water. Usually 3rd week in Oct is best. Weekends are crazy with people, so do weekdays if possible.

commented about 1 year agoThanks Ken. Should be looking a lot like this right about now. I wear ice cleats in places like this though. Too slippery otherwise. Water on top of ice
