Chicago is a city full of trees. From parks to arboreta, there are plenty of opportunities to witness the splendor of the seasons as trees morph throughout the year. Chicago photographers have beautifully captured the many faces of trees in and around Chicago. Enjoy this gallery of the best Chicago tree photography from local photographers as hand-picked by our editors.
My Friend and Hugging Tree
This giant pillar stands along the Cowles Bog Trail in Porter County, Indiana, 28 miles from the Chicago city limit. Now it is in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park, but I have known this tree since I was a young boy living in Dune Acres. This trail then was part of an old Indian trail system that stretched from Chicago to Detroit when each was the site of a fort during the French fur trading days. Since 1951 and for 59 years and counting, I have been walking by this tree. Each time I go by I stop and give it a big hug. It has aged a lot slower than I and I am hopeful he will long outlive me. Regardless, he is my friend and I hope he considers me his.

Masterpiece, masterpiece, masterpiece! I can't get it out of my head. To me the tree is personified, slumpt over, arms at rest, alone in the cold - not yet beaten by it all but close. There's a short story for this tree... See comment

Fall Bridge at Warrenville Grove
Warrenville Grove is an interesting little Forest Preserve tucked away in the shadow of a few other larger preserves in the area. With it's rushing waterfall and old concrete bridge, though, it provides some excellent views of nature.

Great shot. It's easy to see why it was the Photo of the Day when you submitted it.

To peg John as one type of photographer simply wouldn't do him justice. He's adept at many photographic styles. We picked him as the featured photographer for this showcase not because he's a great tree photographer, although he does have a few unique tree shots, but because we couldn't publish another showcase without recognizing John as a talent. Take look at his profile and you'll delight in the way he uses a camera. We encourage you to follow him to keep up on his work at Capture My Chicago.

Prairie Trees
While we often dream of photographing in exotic locations, a little exploration of surrounding locals can offer amazing beauty in the simplest details. We spent an afternoon exploring what the great state of Illinois uses as a nickname - The Prairie. The beauty is in the details of this prairie, in an area shaped by glaciers, The wide open prairie and the gentle Kames nearby with Nippersink Creek winding it's way between.

Fantastic light behind the trees! The band of clouds that holds back the light really seals the deal on this shot. Very well done.
